The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a procedure created by John Chao, D.D.S., which offers patients a less invasive method to correct receding gums, compared to traditional options. It restores your smile and increases oral health, without having to slice the gums or utilize stitching afterwards, leaving you with fewer post-procedural symptoms.

When It Is Used

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is utilized when the gum line has receded, leaving more of the tooth exposed. This can result in the exposure of the root, causing pain and extreme sensitivity to warm and cool temperatures. Since this portion of the tooth will lack enamel, recession can ultimately lead to decreased protection and potential decay in the area surrounding the root, resulting in an irreversible condition, which may require more invasive periodontics procedures.

How It Works

The procedure includes using a specialized tool to create a small pinhole in the gum. The soft tissue of the gum is then loosened, which allows the periodontist to pull the tissue across the tooth in the areas where it has receded. This is completed in a gentle and controlled manner. There is no use of any cutting tools such as scalpels with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique; the tissue is not sliced at any point throughout the procedure.

Benefits

Since there is no cutting, the procedure is minimally invasive and includes a shorter period of recovery. A small collagen strip is used to hold the tissue in place, eliminating the necessity for any stitches. There is less swelling and bleeding, compared to traditional methods of correcting receding gums, with substantially less post-procedural pain and discomfort. You may resume your normal activities shortly after the procedure.
